Life With God: Discovering a Better Way to Live, by looking at the Ten Commandments (Exodus 19–20). We discovered that God's commandments aren't simply rules to restrict us, but invitations to experience a better way of living. They show us how to grow in our relationship with God and with one another. And just as God rescued Israel before giving them the commandments, we are reminded that we don't earn God's love by following rules. Instead, Jesus invites us into a relationship with Him and says, “Follow me.”

A Challenge for This Week

Read through the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1–17. Rather than reading them all at once, try reading just two commandments each day, Monday through Friday.

As you read, don't just focus on the rule itself. Look beneath the surface and consider:

●      What does this commandment reveal about the life God desires for me?

●      How might following this commandment improve my relationship with God or others?

●      Where might I be struggling with this, and what would it look like to follow Jesus in this area?

One more suggestion: Have a conversation with someone about what you're discovering. If you have kids, they're exploring these same themes, so this is a great opportunity to talk together as a family.  Here are a couple of starter questions.

●      Why would God give us commandments in the first place?

●      Which commandments are the easiest and hardest to follow?  Why?
